LIGHTHOUSE MINISTRIES

HOW LIGHTHOUSE  MINISTRIES WAS BORN!

by Mary Nolin

As streams from different directions flow together to form a river, so Lighthouse Ministries came into being. Pastors Steve and Mary Nolin had been serving since 1989 as roving pastors to many in the international community in China. Meanwhile Brother Philip Nolin was ministering in the Filipino community in Hong Kong. During this time Sister Mary was also leading a group of Chinese ladies in a Bible study group, while Brother Steve held weekly meetings in City Hall, near Star Ferry, ministering to a multicultural group of people. A number of missionaries were part of this group as well.

People of many races and backgrounds were being ministered to in various places. Many spoke of their search for a church home where they could be fed with a balanced teaching and preaching of the Word. Again and again the request was given for a fellowship to be formed to meet this need. For almost a year the future pastors met together for prayer, sometimes with other missionaries, earnestly seeking God’s direction in the matter. This was not something to be entered into lightly! Finally, God’s direction became clear. Lighthouse Ministries was born out of this time of waiting on God.

The Holy Spirit directed the founders of Lighthouse to follow a principle in Acts 13, where the enthusiasm of youth and the maturity of experience would be blended together so that various ministries already underway could continue in Hong Kong and wherever the need arose. The earliest meetings were not too grand! A group of 16 Filipinos in a city park—a group of missionaries in a home—a mixture of people in a rented hall—all flowed together, and Lighthouse Ministries was born! For two years we met in parks, office spaces, homes, rented halls, hotels. The congregation was outgrowing the space available. That was when we were forced to consider the purchase of our present property. What a leap of faith we took! What a pulling together in sacrificial giving! People from outside Lighthouse who had been ministered to joined in with generous donations helping to  make the dream a reality.

Today we are a river with its source from many streams. We remain a fellowship that welcomes all races, all classes of people. We continue to teach the balanced Word of God, and to reach out to our city and our world. Our leadership has been enlarged to include Brother Rene Lussier and Sister Jennifer Nolin.

Thank God for each one who has had a part in this growing family.
